Reading Habits Tag

Tuesday 22 April 2014
I have been wishing someone would tag me for this since I first read about it on Twitter so I was very happy when the lovely Megan from Reading In The Sunshine tagged me! So go and check out her amazing answers!

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

The bath! The only problem is I become so engrossed in what I'm reading that I forget to add more hot water while I'm in it so by the time I realise I'm not actually a part of the book's world the water is freezing! And my family are screaming at me for being in there too long.

I also love reading in bed as I'm sure most people do. The only problem though is I tend to get a bit sleepy and never read for as long as I would like to.

Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Definitely a bookmark! This is the thing I hate about Kindle, not being able to use my bookmarks because I have far too many of them. If I ever visited anywhere as a child like a museum or somewhere on holiday I would have to buy a bookmark. I am obsessed with them. Recently I collected (and probably shouldn't admit it) the London Underground bookmarks from the transport museum at Covent Garden.

I do sometimes use paper, usually when I can't be bothered moving to find a bookmark or usually just use the receipt from the book if it's one that I've bought! People who fold the page over need a good slap, I do this with library books IF and only if someone else has done it too, it's not as bad then surely?

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter or certain number of pages?

I hate not finishing a chapter. A lot of crime fiction tends to have short chapters, it's good for pace and keeping readers reading but some of them have such long chapters that it seriously annoys me. It just feels incomplete putting a Kindle or book down not having finished a chapter. This is also why I don't like reading when I only have a few minutes spare as it would mean having to stop in the middle of a page.

Do you eat or drink while reading?

I am usually so engrossed in a book that I struggle to remember to breathe let alone eat and drink but usually if I'm on my break in work I do try to eat, drink and read and luckily with a Kindle you can just put it on the table (but don't eat above it or sauce will fall onto it like it did on mine a while ago!).

Do you watch TV or listen to music while reading?

No! I need absolute silence to read and enjoy a book. I just can't cope with noise, this is why I hate reading with people in the house because my family are just so loud and incapable of talking without shouting. Or play music while I'm wanting to read. So I often have to resort to reading in the dead of the night when they are asleep and the house is in silence. I can't read if I can hear music or a TV it's just so annoying.

One book at a time or several at once?

I have tried and succeeded in reading multiple books, if you think about it it's similar to watching a load of TV shows every other day, you don't struggle to keep up with what's going on in them so by that logic it should be the same for a book? A book to me is a bit more personal and I like to spend time with just one book rather than putting it down, picking up another and then putting that down and so on. Also it'd take longer to read them.

Reading at home or everywhere?

I used to read mostly at home but luckily with the Kindle you can read whatever you want wherever you want without whipping out a huge book or having people nose at what you are reading. I like reading on trains, buses (unless there's someone behind me gegging in) and especially outdoors when the weather is nice.

Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Silently! Reading out loud would take longer and is a bit strange. I have sort of slowly read parts of books out loud to help me understand them but would never fully sit there thinking I was a narrator and reading to myself. I used to hate the parts in English where the teacher would ask people to read out loud too. Because some people just read far too slow and with terrible enunciation and no enthusiasm, and this was top set English!

Do you ever read ahead or skip pages?

If I'm not enjoying a book or want it to end so I can move on to a better one I have been known to skip a page or two. Especially on Kindle! With the Kindle 3 and 4 it was so easy to just skip a whole chapter and not feel bad, on the Paperwhite is there a way to do this just as easily? Without having to pull up the chapter list and actually moving it on, either that or I just read the dialogue on a page to read it quicker.

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

Like new! People who break the spine are a disgrace to the reading world. Similarly people who don't look after books also make me sick. I despise finding a book I want in the library to pick it up and discover that it's had water/tea/coffee/paint/questionable liquids spilt on it or the spine is just creased beyond repair to the point where pages are falling out. My mum's hairdresser took some of my old crime fiction books a few weeks ago and was adamant that they hadn't been read, I had to tell her it's because I read them without breaking the spine. All of my books look brand new!

I'm going to be a massive hypocrite here though and say it's hard to hold and read a book, a paperback especially without a broken spine and so I am a bit more lenient with library books and may break them from time to time... I go on about it a lot but my local library recently opened after a £50+ million refurbishment and pretty much every fiction book they had was a brand new copy, I held them like a new born baby whilst reading them so it sickens me to see the state some of them are already in after not even 12 months. People who damage library books should be banned from ever using the library again.

Do you write in your books?

No!!! I think maybe some of my books as a child had my name in but that's about it. In school however was a completely different matter our school books had more writing in them than print, kids just love to deface books for whatever reason.
